Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute presents its top trainees Rising Star Awards in recognition of those who are outstanding role models. These trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows or research residents) are not only successful scientists; they also substantially contribute to the scientific success of their peers through mentorship and collaborative activity.

Michael Borich is a three-time graduate of the University of Minnesota where he received training as a physiologist, physical therapist and rehabilitation scientist. Michael is keenly interested in how the healthy brain learns novel skills and, more importantly, how a brain that has been injured re-learns. To answer these questions, he utilizes advanced brain imaging techniques to elucidate the neural substrates that underlie skill learning in healthy individuals and individuals with neurologic injury or disease.

Michael is completing post-doctoral work under the supervision of Dr. Lara Boyd, Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and director of the Brain Behaviour Lab.  Michael’s research while in the lab has been focused on imaging white matter using advanced MRI methods including Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Multi-Component T2 Relaxation Imaging, a method developed here at UBC by Alex MacKay which measures the myelin component of white matter.

Michael will receive his award at the VCHRI Research Reveal event on Thursday, June 6th at 5pm at Blusson Spinal Cord Centre where he will also be giving a brief presentation of his work.
